Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is one of those things so many of us are so familiar with these days that we might not even feel a great need for SEO marketing experts any more. After all, we’ve all had enough of experts, right?
So, sorry to anyone who might presume they know pretty much everything there is to know about such a specialised and challenging field as SEO. We just cannot agree with that.
There are definitely some real untruths about SEO still floating around – so here are just three of them that we can safely dispel.
1. The quicker you react to algorithm updates, the better
First of all, this is hardly a convenient or inexpensive strategy for any online business owner. Google alone makes about 500 changes to its search algorithm every year – how the blazes are you going to keep up with that?
The good news is that you don’t need to. Instead, focus on the major updates. Keep abreast of what’s being said by the search engines and other reputable sources about the latest upcoming changes, so that you can focus your energies on those that might actually affect your site.
2. You need to include keywords in comments and title tags
Well, fair enough if you wish to do so, but don’t expect them to have much impact on your rankings.
HTML comment tags and the title attributes of IMG and A HREF tags might seem to be the perfect places to shove in a few strategically chosen keywords.
But in truth, something in a comment tag is specifically out of Google’s view for calculating rankings, while title attributes aren’t supposed to have an SEO purpose, either.
3. You can achieve great rankings with great content alone
We would never want to dismiss the importance of the best-quality content here at PENNInk Productions. Timely, relevant and compelling content does matter, but there are many other factors – such as user experience, responsive design and quality backlinks – that can have similar power.
A poorly optimised site might not figure in the rankings at all – so bear in mind that while content may be ‘king’, it still needs its parliamentarians if it is to really make its impact felt.
If you are to achieve the best results in the search engines for your business, you need to apply critical thinking to the challenge – or get the best-qualified and most experienced SEO marketing experts to do that for you.
